Celebrating Our Excellence

Kara Anazia

Graduate Student
Department of Chemistry
University of Florida

Ms. Anazia is currently a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida

What motivated you to excel at UF?

Major motivators of success for me are my faith in God (Christian), my family and my desire to be able to make positive impact in my community. I am an international student from Lagos, Nigeria so I always have it at the forefront of my mind that I am in a privileged position for which many have sacrificed to put me in, so I cannot waste it!

What are your career goals?

I want to become a professor so I can have the opportunity to mentor and teach students. I have had a strong community of faith and academic mentors who believed in me and spoke into me to get me here, so I want to do the same for others.

What does DEI mean to you?

DEI is a great initiative by the University of Florida chemistry department that I am very pleased to be a part of. Being a part of it makes me feel valued and seen as a foreigner and a black woman. It provides a great community and a space for people’s voices, who are not usually heard, to be heard.
