Meet the Author: Shelley Fraser Mickle – Research on “How I Search for my Ancestors,” the work of African American sculptor Woodrow Nash

February 6, 2022 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Award-winning author Shelley Fraser Mickle shares the rich historical research into the work of African American sculptor Woodrow Nash in their newest book “Woodrow Nash: How I Search for My Ancestors.” Synopsis of the book: “Woodrow Nash’s sculptures of enslaved children populate the first American slavery museum–Whitney Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana. His works breathe spirit into history, a legacy as painful as it is inspiring, a vision that engages us in powerful ways. The stories he tells of his artistic process and the images of proud figures fill this unusual book with emotion. Award-winning novelist Shelley Fraser Mickle became friends with Nash and together they crafted a strong statement that illuminates the true history of slavery and the shadows it casts on all Americans.” Shelley Fraser Mickle is an award-winning author who has published over a dozen books, which, along with her commitment to literacy and the power of story, led to her being nominated to the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 2014. Her books have been New York Times Notables, Library Journal’s Best Adult Books and her nonfiction book, “Barbaro: America’s Horse” (2007) won a Bank Street Award.
